Inappropriate Handling of Property

recent minor fire loss in a Chicago residence mushroomed into a complete disaster after an unsupervised "clean-up crew" took "command" of the residence. Here are a few examples of what went wrong:

l Hand woven rugs which could have been hand cleaned and blocked were put through the rigors of chemical cleaning. They were ruined!

l Destructive cleaning solutions were used on expensive upholstery and textiles to remove minor soot. All the furniture had to be re-upholstered as a result.

l Valuable antique items which might have been restored or used for proper identification and replacement value, were simply tossed out.

Mary Moran of Patrick B. King & Associates summarized the experience, "In short, a legitimate $40,000 to $50,000 loss cost the insurance company over $250,000." Always consider utilizing an experienced damage analysis team to organize proper care and handling of all property ( damaged or undamaged) thereby mitigating the loss.

If a proper analysis of the damage had been made immediately after the incident, prior to any treatment, and if the damaged property was placed in the capable hands of qualified and experienced conservators, this horror story could have been avoided.

The staff at Patrick B. King & Associates have the experience and knowledge to avoid the pitfalls described above, always ready to provide you and your client with the best possible services.
